- Ozzie Smith has been
- called the greatest short-
- stop ever to play baseball.
- His defensive play is often
- so spectacular that he
- was given the nickname ΓÇ£The Wizard of Oz."
- His 13 Gold Gloves for fielding are the most
- ever earned by a National Leaguer.
-
- Ozzie has been a major league player since
- 1978, when he started with the San Diego
- Padres. A 13-time All-Star, Ozzie started out
- as a weak hitter but eventually made himself
- into a dangerous offensive player. He rarely
- strikes out, and he draws a high number of
- walks. His best offensive season came in
- 1987. He batted .303, with 75 RBIs and 89
- bases on balls. He also steals a lot of
- bases -- 569 so far in his career.
